The University’s Centre for Transport and the Environment (CATE) is an international research centre specialising in the environmental impacts of the aviation industry.

The centre was established to address the challenges of sustainable development in air transport through research and close collaboration with stakeholders. CATE’s researchers work closely with the regulatory bodies, aviation companies, academics, research laboratories and non-governmental organisations.

What we do
CATE is internationally acknowledged for its aviation expertise:

  • Global climate change
    - investigates the global-scale emissions of aviation and their impact on climate
  • Noise and community impacts
    - addresses the environmental and community impacts of airports, and airline operations in the vicinity of airports
  • Local air quality
    - focuses on the impacts of aircraft on airports  and the ways in which airports and airlines deal with air quality issues

The research undertaken at CATE helps in formulating policy,, supports technological development in the industry and helps to improve operational management. Through its research and influence, CATE is provides help and advice to the policy/regulatory community and the aviation industry  on aviation’s environmental impacts and how it might be addressed.
